About the program

Westerly High School’s 1,200-hour cosmetology pathway covers hair care, nail technologies and skin care. Students combine theory and technical training with practical experience serving clients in the classroom salon.

The high-school course sequence includes Intro to Cosmetology, followed by Cosmetology 1, 2 and 3.

What you get

The pathway provides cosmetology training and preparation for credentialing. Progress depends on completing the required coursework and accumulating the required training hours. Students must also take part in the program’s credentialing process.

A professional license is not automatic from attending classes: the required hours and applicable licensing and assessment steps still apply.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

The CTE pathway accepts applications from Rhode Island high-school students, with first preference for students living in Westerly. Admission depends on a review of school records and available places.

Start cosmetology early enough to earn the required hours. Students beginning in 11th or 12th grade will not accrue enough licensing hours at WHS and receive a transcript for transfer to postsecondary beauty school. Students transferring with previous cosmetology training are reviewed individually.

Out-of-district applicants need approval from their home district’s superintendent.

Application steps

  1. Check the school year on the CTE application and choose your program preferences, including Cosmetology.
  2. Complete the student and parent or guardian information and the student questionnaire. Your parent or guardian must authorize release of the school records used for placement.
  3. If applying from another district, complete the out-of-district application and obtain your superintendent’s approval.
  4. If transferring previous cosmetology training, provide an official transcript showing your grades and accumulated hours.

Applications are reviewed using school records. A lottery is used if qualified applicants exceed the places available.
