About the program

Providence Career & Technical Academy’s Cosmetology/Business pathway combines technical procedures, theory and professional skills. Students log 1,200 hours of training, including practical salon work.

  • Practical learning: Develop procedures and techniques through hands-on salon practice.
  • Professional skills: Build communication, professional habits and leadership.
  • Community experience: The program collaborates with the PCTA Salon, the community and Rhode Island Fashion Week.

What you get

The program prepares you for the state’s written and practical cosmetology exams through technical training and related theory.

Professional licensing is separate from school completion. Completing the coursework does not itself issue a cosmetology license; the state’s examinations are a separate requirement.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school CTE pathway, with a selective application process. Applications are evaluated using:

  • Your essay, guidance counselor’s recommendation and student interview.
  • Seventh-grade final grades and attendance.

Applicants scoring more than 65 out of 100 points enter a lottery for available places. Meeting that score does not guarantee admission.
