About the program

Mitchell Community College’s Cosmetology Diploma Program (D55140) is taught at the Cosmetic Arts Center in Statesville. Training combines theory with hands-on practice in a simulated salon, covering hair design, chemical services, skin and nail care, multicultural practices, professional imaging, product knowledge, and business skills.

The 47-credit plan runs across four terms: fall, spring, summer, and a second fall. These are academic credits, not a stated clock-hour total.

The regular cosmetology diploma remains open. The college’s discontinued Early College Diploma (D55140EC) is a separate pathway.

What you get

You earn a Cosmetology Diploma after meeting the program and college graduation requirements. These include passing all required courses, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, earning at least 25% of the program credits at Mitchell, and settling financial obligations. Some divisions may have additional requirements.

  • Graduation notification: Student Records determines eligibility and sends a notice to your college email during the final semester.
  • Professional licensing: The diploma prepares you for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Completing the program does not itself give you a cosmetology license; the licensing examination is a separate step.

Tuition depends on residency and your course load each semester. The rate is $76 per credit in state or $268 out of state, capped at $1,216 or $4,288 for a semester of 16 or more credits.

Following the diploma’s standard 47-credit, four-term plan, tuition alone would be $3,496 in state or $12,328 out of state at these rates. These are planning examples, not complete program totals; residency, changes to the sequence, repeated courses, and future rate changes can affect your bill.

Administrative, activity, technology, campus-access, and accident-insurance fees are additional. BibliU course materials cost $25 per credit, with a term-wide opt-out option: use the BibliU link in your course learning system by the term census deadline for a refund, and arrange your own materials instead. Buying books elsewhere does not automatically cancel the fee. Make the choice each term.

A complete cosmetology program total, including any separate tools and supplies, is not available.

Federal financial aid

Eligibility not confirmed

Grants and loans are different forms of aid. Mitchell participates in FAFSA-based aid, including Pell Grants, but does not offer federal Direct Loans. Your program and personal eligibility determine which awards you can receive.

Complete the FAFSA using school code 002947 and finish the college admissions process so the Financial Aid Office can review your application. If selected for verification, provide the requested documents; the college then notifies you of your aid eligibility.

Institutional scholarships require a separate scholarship application, at least a 2.0 GPA, and enrollment in six or more credits, with additional donor conditions where applicable. Childcare assistance has limited fall and spring funding. Nelnet spreads eligible tuition and fees into payments; it does not reduce the cost.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

The college’s curriculum admissions process includes official high-school or equivalency records and transcripts from any colleges attended. If you have already earned an associate degree or higher, high-school transcripts or equivalency scores are not required.

Admissions determines whether placement testing is needed. The cosmetology diploma also has technical requirements for communication, safe practical work, hand dexterity, and standing for extended periods. Coursework requires access to college email, Self-Service, the learning system, and Pivot Point Lab.
