About the program

McDowell Technical Community College’s Cosmetology Diploma (D55140) combines classroom learning with hands-on practice in a simulated salon. You study hair design, chemical services, skin and nail care, multicultural practices, professional imaging, business skills, and product knowledge.

The recommended sequence has 47 semester credits over four semesters: fall, spring, summer, and the following fall. These are college credits, not a stated total of clock hours.

This profile describes the academic diploma, not the college’s separate continuing-education courses or its other cosmetology awards.

What you get

You work toward a Cosmetology Diploma by completing the required courses and meeting the college’s graduation requirements.

  • Complete your academic requirements: Finish all required coursework, meet proficiency standards, and maintain at least a 2.0 overall GPA with passing grades. Cosmetology has its own grading rules in the program handbook.
  • Complete the graduation process: Submit the graduation application through Self-Service and settle financial obligations to the college.
  • Take the separate licensing step: The program prepares graduates for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Earning the diploma is not itself a professional license.

Tuition is based on residency and semester credits: $76 per credit for North Carolina residents and $268 per credit for out-of-state students. Each semester’s tuition is capped at 16 credits.

Following the diploma’s standard 47-credit, four-semester sequence, tuition alone would be $3,572 in state or $12,596 out of state, before financial aid. These are tuition-only illustrations, not complete program totals. Books, supplies, college fees, and cosmetology liability insurance are additional.

Some courses use an annual $210 eBook plan. You may opt out, but must obtain the required materials yourself. Graduation clothing is an additional purchase only if you attend the optional ceremony.

Eligibility not confirmed

Start with the FAFSA, using McDowell’s school code 008085. The college recommends applying at least eight weeks before classes begin, submitting any verification documents, and completing separate scholarship applications where needed. Aid depends on eligibility and your award; it is not guaranteed to cover all costs.

A Nelnet payment plan can spread your bill into monthly payments. Enrollment costs $25 per semester, which is nonrefundable; payments are processed on the fifth of each month until your balance is paid.

Eligibility: Arrange through the student Self-Service account with sufficient funds available at enrollment.

Monthly payments are processed on the 5th until the balance is paid in full. This spreads payments; it does not reduce tuition.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

The standard academic admission route requires a high school diploma or high school equivalency, with an official transcript. The college allows some exceptions; these do not establish automatic eligibility for this cosmetology diploma.

Complete North Carolina’s Residency Determination Service (RDS) before applying. Depending on your placement results, you may also need transition or co-requisite classes. Those additional classes do not count toward the diploma’s graduation requirements.
