About the program

Halifax Community College’s cosmetology program combines classroom learning with practical work in a simulated salon. You study hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, professional practices, and business and computer principles.

  • Cosmetology Diploma (D55140): The one-year diploma route described on this page.
  • Associate Degree in Cosmetology (A55140): A separate two-year route.

High-school students also have a Career and College Promise certificate pathway, which is a different award from the diploma.

What you get

  • School award: The diploma route leads to a Diploma in Cosmetology.
  • Licensing step: The training prepares you for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Your diploma is a school qualification; it is separate from the professional license obtained through the state examination process.

Federal financial aid

Available to qualifying students

Start with the FAFSA, using HCC school code 007986, and complete a financial aid application each year. Aid depends on admission, an eligible program, and your individual eligibility; it is not an automatic tuition waiver.

HCC Foundation scholarships have a separate application. Their 2026–2027 deadline has passed, and Early College and CCP students are not eligible for those scholarships. The college also lists a payment plan as an alternative way to pay.
