About the program

Whittier Tech’s high-school cosmetology pathway combines academic studies with training in hair, skin and nail services. You learn hairstyling, cutting, coloring, chemical texture services, facials, makeup and manicuring. In senior year, students can practice in the school’s salon, which serves the public.

Students first explore career programs before choosing a technical area. Admission to Whittier Tech does not guarantee a place in cosmetology: placement depends on exploratory performance and available space.

What you get

  • High-school diploma: meet Whittier’s academic, vocational and competency requirements. Students must pass their technical area each year.
  • Cosmetology training: completing 1,000 hours prepares students for the Massachusetts State Board exam. The professional license is a separate step, not an automatic award at graduation.
  • CTE certificate: eligibility requires attending both academic and vocational classes on campus.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

  • School eligibility: the standard admissions route serves students in Whittier’s 11 member communities who expect to advance to the grade they are applying to enter. Nonresident school-choice applications are considered only if in-district applications leave places unfilled.
  • Cosmetology placement: new applicants entering grade 11 cannot select cosmetology, because the required training hours cannot be completed in two years. Transfers from an existing Chapter 74 career-technical program have a separate process and depend on space in the same program.
  • On-campus study: CTE certificate eligibility requires both academic and vocational classes at the school.

Application steps

  1. Apply to Whittier Tech. Applications open November 1, 2026. The deadline for the class of 2031 is January 8, 2027; the school lists February 1, 2027 for the classes of 2030 and 2029. A school application deadline is not a cosmetology start date, and the grade-11 cosmetology restriction still applies.
  2. Complete and sign the application. On-time, complete applications enter the school’s unweighted lottery when seats are oversubscribed.
  3. If offered a place, verify residency within 14 days of notification.
  4. Complete career exploration and rank your program choices. Cosmetology placement depends on exploratory performance and capacity.
