About the program

Weymouth High School’s cosmetology pathway combines academic studies with three years of cosmetology training, normally in grades 10–12. Students learn hair, skin and nail services, safety and salon practices, with supervised work on clients at Wild Cuts Salon.

The sequence builds from Cosmetology I to Cosmetology II and Cosmetology III. The later stages include required related instruction alongside practical work and prepare students for Massachusetts written and practical licensing examinations.

What you get

  • High-school diploma: complete Weymouth’s academic and CTE graduation requirements, competency determination and community service. The diploma requires 22 school credits and 40 total community-service hours, including at least 10 each year.
  • Technical certificate: eligibility requires credits in the same pathway in junior and senior years; additional conditions vary by shop.
  • Professional preparation: the cosmetology sequence prepares students for Massachusetts licensing examinations. The school diploma or technical certificate is not itself a professional license. Cosmetology I also includes OSHA 10-hour safety training.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

  • High-school eligibility: students applying from grades 8–11 must expect to advance to the grade they seek to enter. Weymouth residents receive priority; nonresidents may apply subject to Chapter 74 requirements, available seats and no resident waitlist. Approved homeschool applicants follow the same admission criteria.
  • Program placement: admission is to CTE, not a guaranteed cosmetology seat. Exploratory performance, preferences and capacity determine placement. Students entering grade 10 or higher may receive a direct placement when space is available.
  • Progression: entry to Cosmetology II or III requires at least 60% in the preceding course, or teacher recommendation and departmental approval.

Application steps

  1. Complete the CTE application, available from November 1 with a February 1 deadline. These are application dates, not class starts.
  2. Follow the weighted-lottery process. The school collects attendance, discipline and applicable residency records; grades, references and essays are not used for admission.
  3. Complete exploration and rank your program choices, unless eligible for a direct placement in grade 10 or above. A place in cosmetology depends on capacity and the applicable course prerequisites.
