About the program

Southeastern’s high-school cosmetology pathway combines academic coursework with 1,000 hours of cosmetology training, completed during senior year. Students learn hair, skin and nail care, beginning with safety, shampooing, styling and manicuring before progressing to cutting, coloring, permanent waving and chemical relaxing.

In the later years, students practice on clients in the student-run salon, with instructor guidance, while preparing for the state board examination.

What you get

The 1,000-hour cosmetology program prepares students for the cosmetology examination. Completing the training is a step toward licensing, not an automatic professional license.

Students must also meet the high-school graduation requirements, including at least 128 school credits and the district’s competency determination. These school credits are separate from cosmetology training hours.

Schedules & start dates

Students alternate between academic instruction and vocational training. The school describes five academic days followed by five vocational days. Grade 9 begins with technical exploration; students move into their permanent program at the end of the first semester.

The school-day timetable includes other classes and breaks, so it is not the same as credited cosmetology hours per week.

Textbooks are loaned free and remain school property; lost or damaged books can be billed to the student. Freshmen do not have to purchase program clothing or tools until permanent placement at the end of the first semester. They still need long pants and closed-toe shoes during exploration.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school pathway, not an open adult course. Students must be promoted to the grade they plan to enter. Residents of Brockton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxboro, Mansfield, Norton, Sharon, Stoughton and West Bridgewater have priority.

Nonresident applicants must also complete the Chapter 74 tuition application through their home-district superintendent. Homeschooled applicants need a copy of their superintendent’s home-school approval letter.

Admission and program placement are separate. Being offered a high-school place does not guarantee a cosmetology place.

Application steps

  1. Apply to the high school. Applications can be completed online, or families can request a paper copy or visit the Admissions Department.
  2. Receive an admission decision. When applications exceed available school places, a weighted lottery is used; resident applicants have priority.
  3. Explore technical programs in grade 9. Students try different programs before making their choices.
  4. Receive a program placement. First choices are accommodated where space allows. Oversubscribed programs use a 400-point ranking based on academics, attendance, behavior and vocational evaluations—not the school-admission lottery.
