About the program

Smith Vocational’s cosmetology pathway combines high-school academics with 1,000 instructional cosmetology hours. Training covers hair cutting and styling, colour and chemical services, skin care and nails.

Students practise in the school’s on-site cosmetology laboratory, developing client consultation, sanitation, product knowledge and safety skills. Related study covers the science of hair, skin and nails and the business skills involved in working in or managing a salon.

What you get

The school describes study toward a High School Diploma and a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency. These are school qualifications, separate from a professional cosmetology license.

  • School learning: academic study and vocational shop training form the high-school pathway.
  • Cosmetology preparation: the course includes 1,000 instructional hours and prepares students for the State Cosmetology Board examination. Completing training is not the same as receiving the professional license.

Schedules & start dates

Students spend alternating weeks in shop and academic classes. This is a high-school study pattern, rather than a separate adult day or evening course. Exact cosmetology class times and credited hours per week are not confirmed.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a public high-school pathway. Incoming grade 9 applicants are generally grade 8 students who expect to be promoted.

Your home district’s vocational options affect eligibility. The admissions rules normally direct incoming grade 9 students to their resident district’s vocational exploration programme when one is available.

The school uses an admissions lottery, and available places can limit entry to individual programmes. Grade 10 and 11 transfer applicants for fall 2027 are initially waitlisted.

Application steps

  1. Apply during the 2027–28 application window: November 1, 2026 to February 15, 2027. An electronic application is available through the school, or a paper application can be obtained through a school counselor.
  2. Watch for the lottery outcome. Applicants receive either conditional acceptance for fall 2027 grade 9 or a place on the waitlist.
  3. If accepted, confirm within two weeks of the acceptance date. Further offers are made from the waitlist as places become available. A school offer does not remove programme space limits.
