About the program

Putnam Academy’s cosmetology pathway introduces the art and science of hair, skin and nails, with training aimed at the skills needed for the Massachusetts cosmetology examination. It combines vocational learning with the school’s academic programme.

Grade 9 begins with shop exploration. Students try vocational areas, rank their preferences and receive a permanent placement based on exploratory performance and available places. Admission to Putnam is not a guaranteed place in cosmetology.

What you get

The school pathway leads to a High School Diploma when you complete the required credits and meet the district’s competency requirements. Putnam combines academic and vocational/technical credits, with higher credit requirements than the district’s standard high-school route.

  • Your school qualification: the diploma recognises completion of high school and its required coursework.
  • Your cosmetology training: the programme develops skills for the Massachusetts cosmetology examination. This preparation is separate from receiving a professional license.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a public high-school pathway, not a confirmed adult-training course. Incoming grade 9 students use the district’s High School Choice process. Places after that depend on the district’s assignment rules and available space.

Cosmetology placement is a separate step. During grade 9 exploration, shop preferences and performance help determine permanent placement. The exploratory assessment covers attendance, shop participation, assignments and professionalism.

Application steps

  1. Use Springfield Public Schools’ enrollment and high-school choice process. Incoming grade 9 students ballot during the district’s choice window; later assignments depend on available places.
  2. Once enrolled at Putnam, take part in grade 9 shop exploration and rank your preferred vocational areas.
  3. Receive your permanent shop placement. Preferences, exploratory performance and availability determine placement, so the first choice is not guaranteed.
