About the program

Northeast Metro Tech’s cosmetology pathway combines hairdressing with salon business skills, safety, sanitation, anatomy and physiology. As training progresses, students study hair cutting, styling and coloring, permanent waving, skin care, makeup and nail services. Senior students build practical skills through salon and clinic client work.

This is a four-year public high-school pathway. Students explore technical areas in grade 9 before choosing a permanent shop. Admission to the school does not guarantee a cosmetology place: shop placement depends on preferences and available space.

What you get

The high-school pathway leads toward a High School Diploma and Certificate of Vocational Proficiency. Cosmetology students also complete training for the Massachusetts State Board examination.

  • School qualifications: the diploma and vocational certificate recognise your academic and technical study.
  • Professional licensing: the programme lists 1,000 hours of exam preparation; passing the required state examination is a separate step. Graduation alone does not issue a cosmetology license.
  • Additional training: the programme lists OSHA general-industry safety, Barbicide sanitation, advanced hair-coloring and product-specific hair-extension certifications.

Cooperative education opportunities have additional eligibility requirements, including successful licensing.

Schedules & start dates

Students combine academic classes with vocational shop training, alternating between them week by week. Grade 9 begins with technical exploration before permanent shop placement.

The 1,000-hour exam-preparation requirement is not the same as a weekly class schedule or the total length of high school.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school programme, beginning with grade 9 technical exploration. Northeast Metro Tech serves Chelsea, Malden, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield, Winchester, Winthrop and Woburn.

Students rank the shops in which they earned a passing exploratory grade. Cosmetology placement is subject to available space; full shops use waiting lists based on preference order and the exploratory grade.

Application steps

  1. Use the school’s application portal with your parent or guardian. Select Start New Application and register using a personal email address.
  2. Complete and submit the application. The school sends an email confirmation.
  3. After enrollment, take part in grade 9 exploration and rank the shops you passed. Permanent shop placement is separate from school admission, and the first choice is not guaranteed.

If you are not placed in your chosen shop, a parent or guardian may request a placement review in writing to the Principal within 30 days.
