About the program

At Nashoba Valley Technical High School in Westford, cosmetology is a high-school pathway combining academic classes with 1,000 hours of cosmetology training. Students study hair cutting and styling, color and other chemical services, extensions and wigs, nail care, skin treatments and makeup, together with professional ethics, salon management and state laws.

Students develop practical skills in a supervised salon open to the public. Ninth graders explore technical programs before choosing their major; cosmetology placement depends on the school’s selection process and available places.

What you get

  • School qualifications: Earn a high-school diploma and technical certificate by completing the academic and technical curriculum and the school’s graduation requirements. These include attendance, a portfolio and capstone project, OSHA 10, career planning, community service and the school’s competency requirements. Outstanding school bills must also be settled.
  • Cosmetology licensing: Complete 1,000 cosmetology training hours and pass the Massachusetts state board examination. The school qualifications and professional license are separate; receiving a certificate alone does not grant the license.
  • Practical preparation: Work in the supervised school salon helps you build experience serving clients.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

  • Who can apply: High-school applicants from Ayer, Chelmsford, Groton, Littleton, Pepperell, Shirley, Townsend or Westford who have been promoted from their previous grade.
  • School admission: Completed applications go through an admissions review and lottery process.
  • Cosmetology placement: Freshmen explore technical programs, then rank four choices. Placement considers the school’s criteria and available places, so school admission does not guarantee cosmetology. A shortened exploratory route is available for tenth-grade transfers.
  • Enrollment records: A current physical examination, proof of immunizations and the annual emergency and health form are required.

Application steps

  1. Get the high-school application from your guidance counselor or use the online application linked from the admissions page. Complete all required fields and signatures.
  2. Use an email you can keep checking. Use a personal or parent/guardian address, not your current school email. Look for the confirmation email and check your spam folder.
  3. Follow the admissions updates. Supply any missing documents. The admissions committee reviews completed applications and notifies applicants of their lottery entries before the lottery.
  4. Complete enrollment forms and provide the required health records. Parents and students acknowledge the handbook through the Aspen portal.
  5. Explore and choose your technical major. After exploration, rank four programs. The school works through those preferences, but oversubscribed programs have a separate placement process.
