About the program

Medford’s cosmetology pathway provides 1,000 hours of instruction in hair cutting, styling, coloring and permanent waving, manicuring, and make-up application. The curriculum uses core, adaptive and creative levels and combines technical skills with theory and entrepreneurship.

Students work with clients, practice consultations and communication, and learn computerized salon software. Grade 9 students begin with first-semester shop exploration before choosing a technical pathway. Program places are limited, and oversubscribed programs use a lottery.

What you get

The cosmetology pathway provides 1,000 earned training hours toward eligibility for the Massachusetts licensing examination. It develops practical beauty-service skills alongside client consultation, communication and salon software experience.

Completing training and earning a professional license are separate steps. The school describes successful completion of the program followed by passing the state board examination; completing the course alone does not award a professional license.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school pathway. All grade 9 students have the opportunity to join CTE exploration. Admission to a specific technical program depends on capacity; a lottery is used when a program fills.

Students seeking entry in grades 10–12 are considered under the school’s CTE admissions policy. Students new to Medford Public Schools also complete district registration, which is separate from placement in cosmetology.

Application steps

  1. If you are new to Medford Public Schools, complete the district registration packet and gather the applicable residency, health and prior-school records.
  2. Bring the registration documents to the Registration Office at Medford High School, 489 Winthrop Street.
  3. For grade 9, take part in CTE exploration before pursuing a technical-program place. Students applying in grades 10–12 follow the CTE admissions policy.

School registration does not reserve a cosmetology place. Technical programs have limited capacity, and oversubscribed programs use an admissions lottery.
