About the program

Madison Park’s 1,000-hour cosmetology pathway combines high-school studies with practical training in hair cutting, styling, coloring and waving, nail care, and skin and scalp care. Students work on mannequins and live models, learn sanitation procedures, and develop salon-management and client-service skills.

Students begin with freshman career exploration before choosing preferred technical programs. Placement considers grades, attendance and participation; admission to the school does not guarantee a cosmetology place. Senior-year training includes a capstone project and preparation for the state board examination.

What you get

  • School awards: Students work toward a high-school diploma and vocational certificate by completing the school’s academic and technical requirements.
  • Professional licensing: The cosmetology pathway leads to 1,000 training hours and preparation to sit for the state board examination. The school awards are not themselves a professional license.
  • Additional training: The program also lists Barbicide, Pravana Hair Color and OSHA 10 certifications, which are separate from state cosmetology licensing.

Schedules & start dates

During freshman exploration, students alternate between academic weeks and vocational weeks, when they try different career programs. This introductory rotation comes before placement in a chosen technical program.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school pathway, with school applications accepted for grades 9, 10 and 11. Applicants complete a CTE awareness activity as part of the school-admission process. If applications exceed available places, admission uses a weighted lottery.

Applicants coming from charter, private or independent schools must first register with Boston Public Schools before completing school choice. Freshman placement in cosmetology follows the separate exploratory process and considers grades, attendance and participation.

Application steps

  1. Complete the Madison Park online school application for the applicable intake.
  2. Complete one CTE awareness activity: an open house or information session, a school tour, an approved video module, or a statement of interest.
  3. Submit the BPS School Choice Form. Rank Madison Park first only if it is your first preference. Applicants from charter, private or independent schools must register with BPS first.
  4. If you attend a non-BPS school, your sending school must supply official attendance and conduct records for lottery weighting.

The school application, awareness activity and BPS choice form must all be complete for lottery eligibility. Freshman technical-program placement takes place after exploration.
