About the program

Keefe Regional Technical School’s 1,000-hour cosmetology pathway combines high-school academics with training in hair cutting, styling, coloring, perming, facials and manicures. Students practice on community clients in the school’s public salon, with an emphasis on sanitation, sterilization and salon management.

Students begin with grade 9 career exploration, then specialize in a technical program for grades 10–12. Admission to Keefe and placement in cosmetology are separate decisions; a first-choice program place is not guaranteed.

What you get

Students earn a high-school diploma by completing the school’s academic, technical and competency requirements. The cosmetology pathway prepares students for the Massachusetts State Board of Cosmetology examination; the diploma is not itself a professional license.

A Chapter 74 Certificate of Occupational Proficiency is a separate, conditional school award. It requires at least two years of full-time technical study, demonstrated technical and employability skills, and a portfolio containing competencies, industry credentials, a career plan and résumé. Students can earn their high-school diploma without meeting all certificate requirements.

The program also lists SP2 safety, bullying-awareness, ethics and résumé-building certifications, which are distinct from a professional cosmetology license.

Schedules & start dates

In grades 10–12, students alternate between an academic week and a technical-program week. Technical training meets five days during technical weeks, rather than every week throughout the school year.

Approximate total program cost before financial aid

For eligible enrolled high-school students, Keefe charges no direct school attendance or activity fees. This is a regional high-school pathway, not an open adult course.

Students must return borrowed books, tools and materials in good condition; lost or damaged items can lead to replacement charges. The school-attendance cost does not establish the cost of a separate state licensing examination or license application.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This pathway is for high-school students, primarily from Ashland, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton and Natick. Applicants must be promoted to the grade they wish to enter, and resident applicants must provide proof of district residency.

  • Out-of-district applicants may be considered when space remains and need approval through their sending superintendent’s Chapter 74 nonresident process.
  • Homeschooled applicants need their superintendent’s approval letter and must enroll full-time.
  • School admission and cosmetology placement are separate. The school uses a weighted admissions lottery; ninth-grade students then explore technical programs before placement according to assessment results and available places. Upper-grade entry also depends on program capacity.

Application steps

  1. Complete the online school application for the fall intake. For fall 2027 grade 9 entry, the application window is October 15, 2026–January 15, 2027, ahead of the March 2027 lottery.
  2. Submit all required application fields, including the residency attestation for in-district applicants. The school gathers attendance and discipline records separately; their receipt is not required for an otherwise submitted application to count as complete.
  3. Review the lottery and enrollment notices in the application portal. If offered a place, complete the enrollment steps within the deadline in the offer.
  4. Take part in grade 9 career exploration before technical-program placement. A school offer does not reserve a cosmetology place.

Nonresident and upper-grade applicants follow the separate eligibility and space-available routes. These are school-application dates, not cosmetology class start dates.
