About the program

Holyoke High School’s Dean Tech Campus offers a four-year cosmetology pathway combining academic study with 1,000 hours of coursework and hands-on experience. Students learn hair, skin and nail care, alongside safety, cosmetology theory and business skills.

In the training salon, students practice services on clients under instructors’ guidance. The program also develops interview skills, time management, workplace communication, marketing and entrepreneurship. Eligible seniors can take part in cooperative education or internship placements in area salons and spas.

What you get

Students prepare for the Massachusetts cosmetology state board examination in senior year after completing 1,000 hours of coursework and hands-on experience. Preparation for the examination is not an automatic professional license.

The pathway also includes OSHA 10 certification by junior year. This safety certification is separate from the cosmetology license.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a grades 9–12 high-school pathway, not an adult career-school course. Students must be promoted to the grade they wish to enter. Holyoke residents receive priority; nonresident applicants follow a separate process and can be offered places only after eligible residents have been placed.

Homeschooled students may apply under the same eligibility requirements, with approval of their home-education plan from their town’s superintendent or school committee. Upper-grade entry depends on space and alignment with the technical sequence.

Admission to Dean is not a guaranteed cosmetology place. Ninth graders explore the CTE programs before final placement, which depends on assessment and available places.

Application steps

  1. Submit the online SchoolMint application, or use the paper application available through the HPS Enrollment Center.
  2. Prepare the required enrollment documents, including academic records, health and immunization records, and residency evidence where applicable.
  3. Complete, eligible applications received by the deadline enter a weighted admissions lottery. If offered a place, follow the acceptance instructions in the written notification.

School admission comes before the separate exploratory and technical-program placement process.
