About the program

Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School offers cosmetology training within a high-school education, from freshman exploration through senior-level practice. Students develop skills in hair styling, cutting, coloring, skin care and nails, alongside safety, client service and business skills.

In the student salon, students provide services to clients under licensed professionals’ supervision. Training also includes a professional portfolio and preparation for the state licensing examination after 1,000 hours of instruction in the Cosmetology Clinic.

What you get

After 1,000 hours of Cosmetology Clinic instruction, students are prepared to take the state cosmetology licensing examination. The program includes exam review and practice tests; completing school training does not automatically award a professional license.

Students also develop a professional portfolio. The program lists OSHA 10, Milady skills credentials, and eyelash-extension, hair-extension and nail-enhancement certifications among its certification opportunities. These are distinct from a school graduation award and the state license.

Schedules & start dates

The school combines academic learning with six-day shop cycles. A shop cycle is not the same as a calendar week.

Eligible students may apply for paid cooperative education in place of their normal shop cycle. This requires meeting the co-op requirements and a CVTE teacher’s recommendation; participating students provide their own transportation. A co-op opportunity is not a guaranteed job for every student.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school program, with priority for residents of New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fairhaven. Nonresidents may also apply, but eligible residents are admitted first. Students must be promoted to the grade they wish to enter, and resident applications require residency verification before the lottery.

  • Grade 10 or 11 transfers: Entry depends on available technical-program places.
  • Grade 12 transfers: Applicants must be transferring from another Massachusetts vocational technical high school, with space in the relevant program.
  • Homeschooled applicants: The same standards apply, with a superintendent’s approval letter and a representative portfolio when report cards are unavailable.

School admission and cosmetology placement are separate. Freshmen explore technical programs before choosing a permanent shop; performance and completion of Career Cruising assignments matter for placement.

Application steps

  1. Complete the Go2CTE online application through the school’s admissions page. A paper application is available when the electronic application cannot be accessed.
  2. Arrange for the required school records. Incoming ninth-grade applicants need attendance and discipline records from grades 7 and 8, submitted by their sending-school counselor.
  3. Complete residency verification, where required, and review the application status in Go2CTE so missing school data or other incomplete items can be resolved.

The school uses a weighted lottery when places are limited. Completed applications received by the applicable deadline are eligible; positive weights increase selection chances.
