About the program
Greater Lowell Technical High School offers cosmetology as part of a regional high-school education. Ninth-grade students explore technical programs before applying for a placement. The cosmetology sequence then develops over grades 10–12, toward 1,000 hours of training.
- Cosmetology 2: Foundations in hair styling, cutting, perm winding, facials, makeup, waxing and manicures.
- Cosmetology 3: More advanced cutting, coloring, chemical services, artificial nails and eyelash extensions.
- Cosmetology 4: Practical services with actual clients in a salon-style environment, alongside an online portfolio of students’ work.
What you get
The cosmetology sequence prepares students to complete 1,000 training hours and apply for the state board examination. Completing the course is not the same as holding a professional license; the examination is a separate step.
Training also includes OSHA 10-hour General Industry for Cosmetology certification and development of an online portfolio. The OSHA safety credential is separate from a school graduation award or cosmetology license.
Schedules & start dates
In grades 10–12, one week of academic and theory classes alternates with one week in the technical program. This is a high-school timetable, not a standalone weekly cosmetology course.
Taking AP Seminar can affect the number of hours earned in technical or theory classes. That matters when planning progress toward the cosmetology program’s 1,000-hour requirement.

How to enroll
Entry requirements
This is a high-school program, not an adult career-school course. Students must be promoted to the grade they are entering. Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell and Tyngsborough residents receive priority; nonresidents may apply and can be considered through an additional weighted lottery if seats remain.
Homeschooled applicants follow the same admissions standards and must provide their superintendent’s approval letter showing their current and expected grade.
Admission to the school does not guarantee a cosmetology place. Ninth-grade students explore technical programs and apply for a specific program in their second semester. Placement depends on exploratory performance and available places; transfer entry also depends on capacity.
Application steps
- Submit an online or paper school application. Applications will be available no later than November 1, 2026. The grade 9 deadline is January 29, 2027; the grade 10 deadline is June 1, 2027.
- Complete one CTE-awareness activity: attend the open house or an in-person/virtual information session, tour a CTE school or program, or complete DESE’s CTE video module.
- Arrange the required school attendance and discipline records. District residency must be confirmed five business days before the lottery. Completed in-district applications received on time enter the lottery; extra weighting can improve selection chances, not disqualify an otherwise eligible completed applicant.
- If offered a place, register within 10 calendar days of notification. Beginning July 1, 2027, that window shortens to 3 calendar days. A transfer waitlist ranking is not itself an admission offer.
These are school-application deadlines, not cosmetology class start dates. Nonresident applications follow the separate space-available route.
