About the program

Greater Lawrence Technical School offers 1,000 hours of cosmetology training within its regional high-school program. Training covers hair, skin care, nails and salon management.

Students complete safety training before using tools and equipment, then work with clients in the Great Looks Today school salon under licensed instructors’ supervision. Freshmen explore the school’s career and technical programs before choosing a path. The school also offers opportunities to earn barbering hours.

What you get

Students in the school’s technical programs are expected to attain a Certificate of Proficiency in their chosen field before graduation. The cosmetology program also includes OSHA 10 certification.

Eyelash-extension and hair-extension certifications are additional opportunities, not automatic awards for every student. The course prepares students for Massachusetts cosmetology licensing; the school qualification and professional license are separate.

Schedules & start dates

Cosmetology is part of a high-school education that combines academic and technical study. Technical education accounts for almost half of students’ school time; the general school bell schedule covers more than cosmetology training.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

For 2027–2028, students currently in grades 8, 9 or 10 who live in Andover, Lawrence, Methuen or North Andover may apply. Final enrollment requires completion of the current grade, promotion to the next grade and residency verification.

Nonresidents may apply by the separate March 15 deadline. They must also submit a nonresident tuition application to their home district by April 1; both GLTS acceptance and home-district tuition approval are needed. Homeschooled students may apply full-time with a superintendent’s homeschool-approval letter. Accepted students experiencing homelessness can enroll without the usual documentation.

School admission and cosmetology placement are different. School selection uses a lottery when places are oversubscribed, not grades, attendance, discipline or recommendations. Placement in a career program follows exploratory evaluations, student preferences and available seats, so admission does not guarantee a cosmetology place.

Application steps

  1. Apply through the GLTS Admissions Portal when applications open November 1, 2026. Paper applications are also available from the Admissions Office.
  2. For the resident incoming ninth-grade lottery, apply by February 1, 2027. Late applications enter a separate pool after the initial community waitlist is exhausted. Resident grade 10 or 11 transfers have a March 1, 2027 deadline and depend on available seats. Nonresidents follow the separate process described above.
  3. Complete enrollment documents, residency verification and current-grade promotion requirements.
  4. Respond promptly to an offer: the general lottery window is 10 calendar days, while transfer applicants selecting an available career program have 5 calendar days to choose and accept.

These are school-admission dates, not cosmetology class start dates.
