About the program

Essex Tech’s high-school cosmetology pathway combines hair, skin and nail care with academic study. Students begin with a grade 9 exploratory course, then develop practical techniques and related theory through the later grades.

Learning covers sanitation, customer service, styling, coloring, chemical services, skincare and nails. In the later years, students practice client services in a public-facing salon learning lab and develop portfolio work.

What you get

The pathway leads toward a high-school diploma and certificate of completion, while preparing students for the state cosmetology licensing exam. The program describes 1,000 theory and practical hours; a school qualification and a professional license are separate steps.

Qualified seniors in good academic and career-technical standing who have passed the state board exam may participate in Cooperative Education, gaining paid, job-related experience with a cooperating employer.

Schedules & start dates

Cosmetology is part of the high-school timetable, alongside academic courses. The grade 9 introduction is followed by full-year practical and theory courses in grades 10–12. This is a school-based learning sequence, not a standalone adult evening course.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school career-technical pathway. Essex Tech’s career-technical admissions serve its 17 member communities: Beverly, Boxford, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Lynnfield, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Marblehead, Middleton, Nahant, Peabody, Rockport, Salem, Swampscott, Topsfield and Wenham.

The school uses a lottery-based admissions process. Its separate statewide agricultural admissions route should not be read as statewide access to cosmetology.

Application steps

  1. Complete the Essex Tech admissions application and follow the school’s admissions policy.
  2. For fall 2027 / grade 9 entry, applications open by November 1, 2026 and are due January 10, 2027.
  3. Follow the school’s lottery process. The lottery date for that cycle is still to be set.

The application deadline for the 2026–27 school year has already passed. These are school-admission dates, not confirmed cosmetology class start dates.
