About the program

At Blue Hills Regional Technical School, cosmetology is a high-school career and technical program combining academic study with 1,000 hours of cosmetology training. Students learn hair care, skin and nail care, health and safety practices, customer service and salon business skills.

Training develops from the fundamentals to live-model practice in the student salon clinic, with written and practical mock exams to prepare for the state operator examination. Ninth graders explore technical programs before ranking their program choices; admission to the school does not guarantee a cosmetology place.

This is a public high-school program, not an adult cosmetology-school tuition package. For an accepted nonresident student, the home city or town is responsible for tuition and transportation rather than the individual family.

A complete cosmetology cost covering any required materials, supplies and examination charges is not available. The tuition arrangement should not be read as confirmation that every program expense is covered.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

  • Who can apply: Students seeking high-school admission. The policy invites rising or current eighth- and ninth-grade students, with residents of Avon, Braintree, Canton, Dedham, Holbrook, Milton, Norwood, Randolph and Westwood given priority.
  • Grade progression: Students must be promoted to the grade they plan to enter, and residency documents are required.
  • Other routes: Nonresident and homeschooled students may apply under the school’s conditions. Nonresidents also need the Chapter 74 tuition application; admission depends on available places.
  • Cosmetology placement: Ninth graders complete technical exploration and rank three program choices. Placement uses exploratory scores, so a cosmetology place is not guaranteed.

Application steps

  1. Complete the high-school application online or on paper, including residency documents. Submit it to Admissions directly, by mail or through your school counselor.
  2. Take part in the admissions process. When applications exceed available places, the school uses a weighted lottery, with resident priority.
  3. Confirm an offered place within seven business days. Your sending school must provide a final transcript showing promotion to the required grade.
  4. Complete enrollment requirements: placement testing, updated physical examination and immunization records, and the required registration forms.
  5. Explore and choose a technical program. Ninth graders rank three choices after exploration; cosmetology placement is a separate step from school admission.
