About the program

Build cosmetology skills alongside your high-school education at Blackstone Valley Tech. The pathway includes 1,000 hours of cosmetology instruction, with training in hair, skin and nails, sanitation and salon business.

Students practice in the Salon at BVT; juniors and seniors work directly with members of the public under the program’s professional staff.

What you get

Work toward a high-school diploma and vocational certificate while preparing for cosmetology licensing.

  • Complete the required academic and technical courses, with a passing final average of at least 60.
  • Meet attendance requirements, submit the required vocational portfolios and earn OSHA certification.
  • After 1,000 hours of cosmetology instruction, you become eligible to take the state licensing exam. The school qualifications are not themselves a professional cosmetology license.

Schedules & start dates

The school day runs 7:36 AM–2:10 PM. It includes academic classes as well as technical study, so these times are not a measure of weekly cosmetology training hours.

Tool scholarships can help eligible seniors prepare to enter the workforce after graduation. These awards are competitive rather than guaranteed, and are separate from the cost of attending the high-school program. Application details and deadlines are shared with seniors through Canvas.

Fran Dupre Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: A senior of good character with solid performance in their chosen field who will enter the workforce upon graduation.

Selection is made by the Dupre family. Supports tools for the transition into work after graduation, not a guaranteed reduction in high-school program costs. Seniors receive application information and current deadlines through Canvas.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This is a high-school pathway, not a standalone adult cosmetology course.

  • Applicants must be eligible for promotion to the grade they seek to enter.
  • Residents of the district’s 13 member towns receive priority. Out-of-district students may apply with a Chapter 74 form and are considered after district residents.
  • Homeschooled applicants follow the same admissions standards and must provide approval of their homeschool curriculum.
  • Admission to BVT does not guarantee a place in cosmetology; vocational placement depends on the exploratory process and available seats.

Application steps

  1. Apply to BVT online or using a paper application. Applications open November 1; the incoming ninth-grade deadline is January 15, and the tenth- or eleventh-grade deadline is March 1.
  2. Complete the application requirements: residency verification and career-technical awareness through an open house, information session, tour or admissions video module.
  3. If offered a place, respond within 10 calendar days and complete registration, including school and health records and confirmation of promotion.
  4. For ninth-graders, complete exploratory before choosing a program. Students rank the programs they explore; a full cosmetology program may have a waiting list.
