About the program

Thomas Edison High School of Technology offers a 1,500-hour cosmetology program over three years, beginning in grade 10. Students study hair, skin and nail care, together with hygiene, sanitation, safety and salon management.

Training combines coursework, lab projects and clinical experience. Students practise services and build business skills by helping manage and operate the in-school Edison Salon under a licensed instructor’s guidance.

What you get

For cosmetology program-of-study completion, students must successfully complete three years of study, earn 1,500 clock hours, and take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetologists licensing examination. The school describes the examination as taking place at the end of the third year.

These requirements contribute to high school graduation credit and eligibility to take the practical and theory examinations. Completing the course does not by itself issue a professional cosmetology license; a separate school-issued cosmetology certificate or diploma is not specified.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

Apply during grade 9 to begin cosmetology as a rising sophomore. Students should be in good academic standing and plan to complete the program in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Applications use an MCPS student account and the district’s part-time high school program lottery process.

Application steps

  1. During grade 9, review Edison’s application page for the current application round and deadline.
  2. Use the official application while signed into your MCPS student account. Students may apply to up to three programs, each through a separate lottery—not ranked choices.
  3. Enter an accurate parent or guardian email so both the student and parent receive the lottery result.
  4. If invited, follow the program-selection instructions. An offer for one program cannot be exchanged for a different program.

Cosmetology begins in grade 10 and continues through grade 12.
