About the program

Careers in Cosmetology develops skills in hair, skin and nail care, with classroom instruction, clinical practice, salon management and a senior capstone project. The pathway is taught at Queen Anne’s County High School.

Students progress through four courses:

  • Cosmetology I: Foundational hair services, facials, manicures and safe practice.
  • Cosmetology II: More advanced techniques and the science behind them.
  • Cosmetology III: Salon business skills, including appointments, client communication and recordkeeping.
  • Cosmetology IV/Careers in Cosmetology: Further clinical practice and preparation for the state board examination.

The standard plan places the sequence across grades 10–12.

What you get

To meet the cosmetology pathway requirements, students must complete 1,500 hours and take the State Board of Cosmetology examination. The courses prepare students for that examination; completing classes does not automatically grant a professional licence.

Successfully completing Cosmetology IV also earns a technical math credit.

Schedules & start dates

Students must complete 1,500 hours before taking the state board examination. After 1,000 classroom hours, eligible students can earn up to 300 hours through directed salon work. This requires satisfactory grades, adequate attendance and instructor approval. Approved work may take place during summer, after school or on weekends; students on Career-Based Learning have an abbreviated school schedule.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

This pathway is available to students from Queen Anne’s County High School and Kent Island High School, with teaching at QACHS. Selection for the CTE pathway uses a lottery.

Cosmetology I is listed for grades 10–11. Students must pass each course before progressing through the sequence. Directed-work opportunities later in the program require satisfactory grades, adequate attendance and instructor approval.

Application steps

  1. Plan the cosmetology pathway with your school counselor as part of high-school course selection.
  2. Follow the CTE pathway lottery process. Students from either county high school can access the pathway at QACHS.
  3. Schedule courses in order, starting with Cosmetology I and continuing only after passing the preceding courses.
