About the program
Cosmetology is a 1,500-hour career and technical education pathway at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School. Students develop skills in hair styling, makeup, skincare and nail care, with practical beauty-service training as part of their high-school studies.
The four-course sequence covers Principles, Theory, Application and Practice of Cosmetology, and includes a senior capstone project.
What you get
The pathway combines 1,500 hours of Cosmetology training with a senior capstone project, providing preparation toward a professional cosmetology license. Completing the school program does not automatically award a professional license.

Entry requirements
Mervo serves grades 9–12 and uses Baltimore City’s school-choice lottery. There are no specific academic entrance criteria for lottery-school admission; if applications exceed the available places, students are selected by lottery. These rules describe admission to the school.
Application steps
For families applying from eighth grade:
- Review your high-school choices and include Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School among your choices if you want to attend.
- Complete the district’s SEMS choice application between December 1, 2026 and January 15, 2027.
- If your child is not currently enrolled in City Schools, follow the additional enrollment instructions and provide the required documents.
