About the program

Cosmetology is a high-school career pathway at Dorchester Career & Technology Center. Students learn hair, skin and nail care, including hair cutting and coloring, chemical texture services, facials, manicures and pedicures. Practice includes work in the student salon.

The sequence spans three school years:

  • Grade 10 — Principles and Practice of Cosmetology: Introductory skills and the science behind cosmetology.
  • Grade 11 — Advanced Cosmetology: More advanced techniques and practical experience.
  • Grade 12 — Mastery of Cosmetology: Refining skills and preparing for the licensing examination.

What you get

This pathway prepares students for the Maryland State Cosmetology Examination, which students are required to take in their senior year. They must first complete 1,500 hours, making up any shortfall through approved internship opportunities. Training and passing the licensing examination are separate requirements; the professional licence is not automatically awarded for finishing classes.

Schedules & start dates

Cosmetology is taken alongside classes at the student’s home high school. Students must accumulate 1,500 hours before the state examination. If class time does not provide enough hours, approved internship opportunities outside class are used to make up the shortfall.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

Students must meet and maintain:

  • A cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
  • At least 75% on all cosmetology summative assessments.
  • At least 90% attendance in scheduled cosmetology instruction.

The introductory course has 20 places. When more students apply, GPA and attendance are considered for admission. Anatomy & Physiology is highly recommended, rather than listed as a mandatory prerequisite. Advanced Cosmetology requires Principles and Practice, and Mastery requires Advanced Cosmetology.

Application steps

  1. Include cosmetology in your annual high-school course selection, with support from your school counselor. Plan for the sequence beginning in grade 10.
  2. Select at least two alternative courses during registration. The cosmetology entry course has 20 places, with GPA and attendance considered if demand is higher.
  3. Plan the courses in order: Principles and Practice, Advanced Cosmetology, then Mastery. Courses with fewer than ten students may be dissolved.
