About the program
The 1,500-hour Careers in Cosmetology program teaches hair, skin and nail care through classroom instruction, clinical experience, mentored work-based learning and a senior capstone project. Training takes place over 11th and 12th grade.
- Level I — 11th grade: Principles & Practice of Cosmetology introduces foundational skills.
- Level II — 12th grade: Honors Advanced Cosmetology and Honors Mastery of Cosmetology develop more advanced techniques.
After completing 1,000 program hours, eligible students may complete up to 300 hours of supervised salon work-based learning, organized through a school–employer training plan.
What you get
The sequence carries 10 high-school credits and leads to a completer certificate. Students must take the Maryland State Board examination to earn that certificate. The course guide requires successful program completion and the instructor’s recommendation before the examination.
The school certificate and a professional cosmetology license are separate. Completing school training does not itself award the license. This Cosmetology sequence has no college-credit articulation agreement.
Schedules & start dates
Level I is taken in 11th grade and Level II in 12th grade. Attendance is monitored throughout the program; students who do not meet the minimum requirements at the end of Level I are dismissed from the program.
