About the program

This 1,500-hour, three-semester Cosmetology program combines theory with practical hair, skin and nail training in an on-site salon. It carries nine high-school credits, separate from the clock-hour requirement.

The course sequence develops skills through Principles and Practices of Cosmetology, Advanced Cosmetology: Theory and Application, and Mastery of Cosmetology.

What you get

The program provides the 1,500 hours of training needed to sit for Maryland’s Cosmetology examinations. Students are required to take the State Board licensing examination at the end of Mastery of Cosmetology.

Completing school training and obtaining a professional license are separate steps; completion alone does not award the license.

Schedules & start dates

Plan for three school semesters. The course guide places the sequence from spring of junior year through senior year. The program page also lists a fall-of-junior-year route ending after the first semester of senior year.

After 1,000 completed hours and an instructor recommendation, students may apply for up to 300 hours of supervised salon work experience.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

Apply in grade 10. Selection considers:

  • 94% attendance and a 2.0 weighted GPA.
  • Completion of required prerequisites and Pathways coursework.
  • Promotion to grade 11.

Students who do not meet these criteria may still be considered. Admission is competitive, so meeting the criteria does not guarantee a place. Human Anatomy and Physiology is recommended, and may be taken concurrently; it is not a mandatory Cosmetology prerequisite.

Application steps

  1. Complete the CCCTC online application in grade 10. The first-round deadline is December 1 of your tenth-grade year.
  2. First-round applicants should receive a decision letter by mid-January. Later applications may be placed on a waitlist and considered if a place becomes available.
  3. If accepted, CCCTC schedules your program. Your home-school counselor helps fit your remaining junior- and senior-year classes around it.
