About the program

Careers in Cosmetology combines theory and practical training in hair, nails and skin care, alongside science, business and communication. Students practice through salon rotations and work with clients in the school salon.

The course sequence progresses through:

  • Principles and Practice of Cosmetology: Foundational skills and career exploration.
  • Advanced Cosmetology: More advanced hair, skin and nail techniques.
  • Mastery of Cosmetology: Refined skills, small-business management and a capstone project or portfolio.
  • Cosmetology Practicum: Further preparation for the state licensing examination, with two- and three-credit versions.

After completing 1,000 program hours, students with their instructor’s recommendation can become eligible for up to 300 hours of supervised off-site salon experience.

What you get

To complete this CTE pathway, students must finish the course sequence and take the written and practical state board examinations. The training prepares students for professional licensing; completing classes does not automatically award a cosmetology licence.

Schedules & start dates

Courses 835–838 are listed at 15 class periods per week during the semester. The two-credit practicum, Course 839, is listed at 10 class periods per week and requires a commitment to 300 supervised salon hours. Class periods are not the same unit as clock hours.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

The first course is recommended for grade 10. Advanced Cosmetology requires Principles and Practice; Mastery requires Advanced Cosmetology; and the practicum requires Mastery.

The two-credit practicum also requires at least 1,000 classroom hours and a commitment to 300 salon hours supervised by a senior cosmetologist. When CTE requests exceed available places, the school uses a selection process.

Application steps

  1. Include Careers in Cosmetology in your high-school Plan of Study. Career majors are identified as part of the plan completed in grade 8.
  2. Plan the courses in prerequisite order, starting with Principles and Practice of Cosmetology. The school uses a selection process when requests exceed capacity.
  3. Keep in mind that a course may not be offered if fewer than ten students enroll.
