About the program

The two-year, 1,500-hour Cosmetology program runs during the junior and senior years of high school. Students develop skills in hair cutting, styling, coloring and chemical services, as well as manicures, pedicures and skin care.

  • Junior year: Build foundational hair, skin and nail-care skills through classroom instruction and practice on mannequins and classmates.
  • Senior year: Develop those skills further while operating the school’s supervised, full-service salon.

What you get

The program provides 1,500 hours of practical and theory training and prepares students for the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam at the end of senior year.

Completing the training is not the same as receiving a professional license: the licensing exam is a separate step.

Schedules & start dates

Plan for a larger school-day commitment in the second year: two blocks at CTC during junior year, then a full day at CTC during senior year. Both years are part of the same program.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

Apply and complete the required Cosmetology shadow experience while you are a current 10th grader. The program itself spans 11th and 12th grade.

Admission is competitive and considers attendance, GPA and the shadow evaluation. Students not currently enrolled in FCPS may shadow and apply, but any offer is conditional on FCPS high school enrollment by July of the upcoming school year. Those applicants must also provide grades and attendance by the application deadline.

Review admission requirements

  2. Complete the shadow experience in the same year you apply. You may shadow and apply for up to two programs.
  3. After shadowing, apply online through the CTC website when the application link becomes available.
  4. Watch your student email for the admission decision after the shadowing and application process concludes.
