About the program

Cosmetology at Boyd J. Michael, III Technical High School is a three-year pathway for grades 10–12. Students learn hair styling, manicures, pedicures and skincare, working with clients in a student-run salon. Training also covers salon management, sanitation and client communication, with preparation for Maryland’s Cosmetology licensure exams.

What you get

The program prepares students for Maryland Cosmetology licensure exams. The Maryland Cosmetology License is the professional credential students work toward; completing the training does not automatically award that license.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

Apply during your freshman year. Cosmetology is Tech High’s only three-year program, and students who do not apply as freshmen are not eligible to enroll. Students attend during grades 10–12.

Academic planning includes Foundations of Technology, Physical Education, Health, Fine Art and all grade-appropriate academic courses. You should have completed these, be enrolled in them or have a plan to complete them. Two years of World Language are required for UMD completers or students planning to attend a four-year university.

Application steps

  1. Sign up for and attend a shadow visit.
  2. Submit the online application after your visit, using the link provided there. Cosmetology students must apply during their freshman year.
  3. The school’s committee reviews your application using an 18-point rubric covering shadow-visit engagement, prerequisites, grades, attendance and behavior. A staff recommendation can provide up to two extra points.
  4. Receive your decision by letter, email or a school visit.
