About the program

American Hair Academy’s 1,550-hour cosmetology/barber program combines classroom learning with supervised practice on the salon floor. Training covers hair cutting, styling and color, men’s grooming, skin care, nails and makeup, alongside client consultation and salon/barbershop business skills.

The course has four terms: two 450-hour terms followed by two 325-hour terms. The school describes completion in as little as 11 months; attendance and progress affect completion.

What you get

The 1,550-hour course prepares you for Iowa’s cosmetology/barber licensing exam. Completing training and obtaining the professional license are separate steps.

The school provides placement assistance, career guidance and referrals, but does not guarantee employment.

How to enroll

Entry requirements

  • Education: a high-school diploma or GED is required. Homeschooled applicants must meet state standards and be beyond compulsory-school age; foreign diplomas require an equivalency evaluation.
  • Existing loans: the school requires previous loans to be current. Its admissions policy states that applicants in default must make nine on-time payments within 10 months or repay in full before enrolling.

Application steps

  1. Tour the campus and discuss your plans with admissions.
  2. Complete the application, provide your education documents and pay the non-refundable $95 fee.
  3. Choose an available class start. Admission is reviewed by the school; a full class may mean moving to a later start.
  4. Complete the FAFSA if seeking federal aid, using school code 016167.
